Latin intertexts in the "Ode ad Florem Gnidi": their metapoetic dimension

Abstract

A detailed study of the Latin inter-texts of the "Ode ad florem Gnidi". In addition to the contribution of Horace O. I 8 to the plot and the irony found in the Ode, other inter-texts present in its structure and rhetorical development are pointed out. However, the fact that all of these have a metapoetic dimension has not been taken into account, which provides the basis for Garcilaso’s experiment in differentiating between lyric poetry and the elegiac mourning of a rejected lover. In an ode that is completely Horatian in style, Garcilaso subtly and ironically defines his distance from the elegiac concept of love and of genres that encompass it, skilfully incorporating texts from Propertius and Ovid.
