Vidas y biografías. La poética de la biografía literaria en el siglo XVIII
Resumen
El objetivo del presente artículo es examinar la naturaleza y el alcance de la modernización de la biografía en el campo de las vidas de escritores. Para explicar la formación de la biografía literaria moderna he comparado las ideas sobre el género y las vidas de poetas castellanos de Juan José López de Sedano (1729-1801) con los principios y métodos biográficos y las vidas de poetas ingleses de Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). El análisis de los textos de estos autores permite detectar cambios significativos en las formas y funciones de la biografía dedicada a escritores. Algunos cambios son análogos en cada caso y otros presentan diferencias, pero se pueden agrupar en tres grandes frentes: la integración de las vidas de poetas en la historiografía literaria, la adaptación de la biografía a los principios y métodos de la erudición crítica y la emergencia de la crítica biográfica. Asimismo, las ideas y prácticas de ambos autores revelan la vigencia de formas y usos tradicionales del género bien entrado el siglo XVIII y manifiestan que la modernización de la biografía literaria se produjo de manera lenta y gradual.
